Major Parts Required for Electric Start Upgrade on Mercury 9.8 / 110

I'm building a parts list to get electric start installed on this 1982 motor of mine and I'm quickly realizing that there's no way I'm paying top dollar for new parts.

So far, as far as major components I know I need: starter, rectifier, (a battery!), a starter switch...what I'm confused about (and forgive the possibly very dumb question) is whether I need a stator. Is there not already a stator under the flywheel? is it a different stator for e-start?

Thanks, guys... still very much learning.

Pierre

The stator would be for charging a battery.-----You need a ---starter / ring gear / push button / solenoid for this conversion.-----Your location.

Thanks for the reply. Much appreciated. Alright, I think I’ve got everything major except for the ring gear. I can’t seem to find that thing on any of the parts diagrams. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

You peaked my curiosity, I have a 1984 Electric start 7.5, 15" shaft in my collection and the starter push button is actually the relay or it just connects the battery positive to the starter positive inside the switch. Mine also has the charging stator and rectifier which I think was another accessory in addition to the electric start option. I always wondered who would have ordered such a small engine all loaded up with these options but I'm glad I managed to get one since I have not seen many like this. I bought it a yard sale in nice condition, had not been run in 10 years, the guy said it was locked up so I know it needed a lot of work. I gave him the $50 and took it home, when I took a look at what I purchased I noticed that the engine was in forward gear so putting it in neutral released the manual starter interlock so that took care of the stuck engine:). Rebuilt the carb, fuel pump, impeller and gearlube and she lit off on one pull. Nice little engine. For your application, your going to need to find the correct flywheel with the ring gear. It is not a separate item hence, no part number listed. Your serial number on the block will be key for the correct search because it is sensitive to which ignition system you have. Mine is the later CDI switchbox design but yours may be an earlier variant like the Phasemaker design. Point being, just make sure you know what you have before you fork out cash for another electric start flywheel.

If you need parts, a really good outfit is Tim's Outboard in Hackensack MN. 218 682 2331. They are expanding and after almost 55 years, have tons of parts. They often ship out same day....tell em "Tim" sent ya. If the part is available here on Marineengine.....then get it here, as I do too. They are very competitively priced and backed up by us techs.
