"Greetings all. I just bought a 2000 Sea Ray Sundancer 240 w/ a 5.7L Merc., Bravo III outdrive. I'm losing gear lube into the bilge from somewhere. No visible sign of where it's coming from, just lube in the bilge and the level drops in the reservoir. A friend said something about lube coming out of the reservoir vent cap. I've not had a chance to look for the leak in depth yet. Just thought I'd post here and see if anyone has any suggestions. Thank you."

If lube came out of the cap it would be all over the bottle. Feel the bottom of the reservior and hose. If you find oil there the bottle hose nipple may be cracked or the clamp and hose are loose.

"You did not indicate the volume of leakage - minor? or requiring additions to the reservoir all the time?
If minor amount of oil, an overfilled reservoir could loose oil from heat expansion due to summer weather and the heat from nearby engine. I have seen one case of a crack in the plastic reservoir wall."

"Thanks to all for the replies

"Thanks to all for the replies. As for the volume of leakage, after about 2 hours total run time, it had dropped from the "full" line to the "fill" line. It took about 1/4 of a quart to fill it back up. Probably a significant leak. I'm probably putting the cart before the horse by posting before looking in depth for the leak, but I thought I'd just see if anyone had experienced a similar problem. I was told by a marine mechanic today that there is only a reservoir and tubing to the outdrive within the boat, so it has to be something simple. If the lube was all over the transom and not in the bilge I'd be much more concerned. Being down in the back prevented me from properly investigating, but will do so this weekend. Thanks again!"

sounds to me like you have a crack in the line inside the boat or the hull pass through fitting is leaking/cracked.

Got the same problem as you do

Got the same problem as you do exactly same drive same oil lose as you do did you find out what it was? I have to fill up the reserve tank every 1.5hrs of driving got a Mercury Bravo 3 out drive as well mixing oil and water in bilge pump area as well cant find the leak looked everywere greased the fitting on the shaft back ther but dont see leak at all.

"Me 2 Same Problem,
After checking all lube oil lines, the Filler bottle etc the nice new added to the filler is always just below the bottle in the bilge nice blue quicksilver oil, have discussed with the team but oil with water will froath same as air and oil this may be the problem but makes sense how in the hell and why does it required to be added and then into the bilge it goes.and then after the run it needed to be added again.
i`m thinking even getting a camera down there and see it happen."

"I've yet to find the sour

"I've yet to find the source of my leak, but with my luck it's probably a seal somewhere. I'm guessing that there's a shaft seal in the outdrive that could be causing it to leak into the bilge if it's bad. I'm ready to pull the boat and take it to the shop. I'm tired of worrying about it!
