"I have a 1940's TS-20 Johnson Seahorse 5hp. I know on the lable it says to replace the gearcase with mobilgrease UW, or seahorse gearlube. I was wondering what kind of lube I should use in the lower unit / gear case?"

"A rule of thumb is to use HiV

"A rule of thumb is to use HiVis Gearlube in any of the mechanical shift or non-shift lower units.

Available at Wal*Mart, K-Mart etc. The container will state HiVis and is usually 80/90w. Also avaulable of course at your local dealership at a somewhat higher cost.

"The modern day equivalent to the manual's requirement is Lubriplate 105. Anything thinner, like 80/90w, is likely to seep out past the metal-on-metal seals. This gets worse as the bronze bushings wear.

If Lubriplate also leaks out, you can go to marine grease -- it is not as likely to leak, but can turn almost solid at freezing temps. It also robs horsepower."
