"I have a 1993 Mariha with a 4.3L V-6 and Mercruser Alpha I outdrive. I noticed the top billow is split. When I drained the lower unit there was about 10 fluid oz's of water in it. Could the split billow be the source of the water in the lower unit or would it be more likley a seal bad somewhere else. I also noticed about 1/4 inch play in the prop shaft when pulling straight back on the prop and pushing it back in, is this in acceptable tolerances or is something wore. (no metal shavings on the bottom drain plug magnet.)"

"the mercruiser manual will give you the tolerances for the thrust on the prop shaft... but a 1/4 inch is a lot.

The upper bellows is the drive shaft bellows. If that was split all the way through you will likely have gimble bearing and ujoint issues. Its been a while but there is a seal where the drive shaft goes into the upper gear housing. Not sure if water would penetrate the drive. Yes, it could obviously be another seal as well.

"that upper seal is a single lip seal so it would injest water if you do your own replacement jay dont skimp on the sealer, it may be goey but use it copiously on the bellows. also you will want to replace all your seals, check your u joints, when you lube if water or copper goo comes out of the caps replace the u joints, and check the gimble bearing, again looking for water when lubing and feeling for a smooth rotation. flush your drive and inspect gears and bearings for water damage."

The best way to approach

Jay
The best way to approach it is as everyone has pretty well suggested.
If there has been water entry into the upper bellows area you need to check EVERYTHING !!!!
If you have the slightest doubt about anything then replace it while you have the drive off.

"Thanks for all the input, one more question do the seloc service manuals provide very detailed instructions with illistrations or are they more like "to remove the drive unbolt it from the engine"?"
