Lower Unit Wont seat?

I have a 1999 150hp Optimax DFI. I had no problem removing the lower unit to replace the water pump. I replaced the pump but now I am having trouble getting the lower unit to seat properly. I'm about an inch shy. I had a friend turn the fly wheel slightly as I pushed but that didn't help. The shaft and shift shaft are lined up properly. The throttle is in neutral.

A friend suggested putting the throttle in forward. I'm hesitant to try this, but if that's the solution I will. Just not sure I'm getting the right advice. Any suggestions would be much appreciated. Thanks.
 
Put the controls in fwd, and the gear case as well. That way, you can turn the prop to align the driveshaft splines. Make sure the water supply tube is aligned with the water pump outlet. Use the alignment tube that came with your water pump kit to help with the water supply tube.
