you gotta hold the propshaft CCW to keep the dog clutch loaded and in gear after you shift into fwd

easiest way is to put prop on and use a bungee to hold it in gear. if you need to turn it to align the splines turn it CCW otherwise it will pop out of gear.

Ayuh,..... I've been using a bungee strap to hold tension on the prop shaft for many years, with, or without the prop on the shaft,.....
 
Ayuh,...... from the cav-plate, 'round the prop shaft, back up to the other side of the cav-plate, Yes,.....
 
I have used a wood clamp (the kind with the screw handle) to hold the upper and lower in place, just close enough to be able to rotate the shift shaft and hold it in position with my left hand while I rotate the prop to make it go into forward. I hold the shift shaft and use my right hand to raise the lower enough to thread one of the nuts onto the stud. I make sure it shifts properly and finish raising the lower before tightening the nuts.

Sometimes, it's easy and sometimes, it's not.
 
I use a homemade outdrive cart, 2x4s on a furniture mover, so the uprights are not angled so the prop has to come off. I slide the spline washer onto the shaft and attach a plumber wrench (heavy) to hold the shaft CCW. Maybe Bondo's way is easier.
