"I have removed the old shift

"I have removed the old shift shaft, the lower unit was in neutral when I removed it. Somehow it popped back into gear. Now I can't seem to reinsert the shift shaft. What is the process for putting the shift shaft back in to the lower unit? It is a 74 Mercury 500 lower unit. Thanks"

It can be tough to g

"Greg,

It can be tough to get the shift shaft back into the cam. You are supposed to remove the bearing carrier and prop shaft so that you can reach in and hold the cam, but it can be done.

It is best to remove the shift cover so that you can see the cam. You can reach down into the lower unit with a thin screwdriver and position the cam so that the shift rod can get into the hole in the cam.
