well,..i replaced the water pump,.. the impellor was totally gone, but the question is , the shift shaft in the lower unit has a long end and a short end, which end goes towards the boat,..all the videos i watched did not say anything about this......

I will toss my info in also,

The splined shaft of the lower twist it CLOCKWISE all the way it will go, while turning the prop COUNTER CLOCKWISE.
This puts the lower into forward,

when you go to install the upper back onto the lower slide it down making sure the brass tube goes into the plastic guide sticking out of the water pump housing, also make sure the little ORING is in place on the oil hole.

The upper will only go down so much then stop due to the splines not being aligned.

Once here the bronze shift arm must be located over the splines and the long end facing the front of drive and MUST point to 12:00 period.

you may have to lift up on the upper a bit to accomplish this, try to also keep pressure on the prop in a c'clockwise direction.

Once the shift arm and splines are lined up and the upper will not go down any further grap the ujoint assembly and twist it until the drive shave splines line up and the drive should drop down more if not all the way. If the drive shaft has a preload pin then you must tighten the nuts to compress the upper to the lower to complete the job.

The stainlees steel shift arm in the gimbal housing must be lined up with the bronze shift arm when putting drive back on..

Hope this helps.
