lower unit removal

iam trying to remove the lower unit so i can change the water impeller and i have removed all the bolts and it only goes down about an inch i really need some quick help evinrude 48 horse power

not sure about the 40 hp but on my 150 you need to disconnect the shift rod which is located under the bottom carb. long skinny screwdriver will do the trick

48hp Model number? There are various shift rod setups.

On my Johnson 100, the shift rod is disconnected by pushing the shift lever towards the engine. This action slides the pin inside the shift rod and frees it. The shift lever is prevented from sliding back and forth by the use of a cotter pin; which must be remove before being able to push the shift lever. The cotter pin is located right below the link & pin assembly (where the shift cables connect).
