I have dropped my Lower unit many times my shift tube is on a splin and once I get all bolts out, I take a pair off locking needle nose pliers and clamp tube where you see tube right below cowling above exhaust area, then when if lower unit doesn't drop I use a rubber mallet to softly hit bottem foot to help it drop .. Once unit drop's shift tube stays then when I come back to reinstall I just have to mess with bottom spline... reminder to grease bearing looking up where shaft goes in, also I lube up shaft it self seems to help it slide back up in case.. I really agree with getting manual for your motor, its well worth it I have always bought service manual for any motor I get.
