Lower unit removal instructions for 1986 Evinrude 40 hp

I am looking for the step by step process for removing the lower unit in my 1986 rude 40 hp. I am attempting to replace the water pump and housing. I have disconnected the 4 bolts from lower unit and the 2 from the trim tabs and lucky without tapping or beating it slid down about 1/2 and inch. Is there another way, other than from up top in the head area, to disconnect? Maybe a hidden bolt or something to make it easier. Thanks in advance.

Have you disconnected the shift rod from the shift lever? This should be located under the carbs. Also before disconnecting the shift rod, make sure you have at least one bolt holding your lower end on or it will drop to the ground potentially causing more problems

Yeah thanks M TWAIN. But I guess i was asking if there was a break in the shift rod towards the lower end of the motor that splices together that is common in some johnsons/evinrudes???????........I am really trying to stay away from removing carbs since it is tuned just right.ANYBODY? ANYTHING?

My 85 30 hp has a disconect located in the gear case housing. You remove the plastic intake screens, hold the larger nut and unscrew the smaller one.

the shift rod connects just below the carb. with a long screwdriver and a flashlight you can get the screw out without removing the carbs
