It might be worth the investment in a repair manual to know for sure what needs to be done and how exactly to do it. Marine engine has them for about $30.00.
Don't be intimidated by removing the power head. I did it and I am not that good at wrenching. Just make sure you get the gasket set for reassembly.

That grease fitting won't help you. Just hang motor upside down and spray blaster, jb80, liquid wrench or similar, along shift rod so it can run down into that coupling. I just assembled another 4.5 hp yesterday. They are ultra simple.........except for the recoil starter. EVERY ONE I get here needs recoil correction.

That's correct. When I move the lower unit, and pull down hard, you can see the shift rod move downward with the lower unit. Also when I try to rotate the lower unit, it seems to pivot directly on the shift rod.

timguy I will be trying your idea this week. But I am thinking that there might be seals blocking the flow from making it all the way down the shift rod?

It has been almost two weeks and you still have not separated the gearbox and it takes about 20 minutes to pull the powerhead if you milk it. If the powerhead dont lift up then your driveshaft is stuck in the crank. If you can remove the powerhead then you can take the cover off the shift gears and spray them with penetrating fluid. Have you tried hanging a cinder block from the gearbox about two inches off the ground?
