Lower unit reinstall 200 mariner

I have a 200 Mariner mfg'd in 96. When I started it this year I noticed there was little water pressure coming from upper tell tale until i rev'ed it up to1800 or so. I replace the thermostats and got same results. I replace the poppet valve (plastic disk between diaphram and screw convex pointing in)...same result.
I dropped lower unit, installed a new impeller,housing,gaskets etc, installed the key properly. Put the LU back with minimal effort other than lining up shifter spline and water feed. Now I get no water from any tell tale. I assumed I lined up water feed wrong so I tried again...thought I was good but still no tell tale water.
Can anyone help me. I need to know exactly how the water feed (copper pipe etc) goes together and in what order. Not sure I have the guide right.

There should have been a small

There should have been a small platic guide tube that came with your new water pump. That guide tube plugs into the top of the water pump. Make sure the rubber o-ring is in the top opening of the water pump before inserting the guide tube. As you slide the the lower unit into place you guide the copper pipe into the guide tube. Tighten your bolts and that should be it. If all this has been done then your probably going to have to open the water pump housing up to see if you installed the impeller in the correct direction. If the drive shaft was not spun in the correct direction while installing the impeller it will have a hard time pumping water. Hope this info is helpful. Good luck. If your motor has thermostates it wont let water come out of the tell tail port till the right temp has been achived.

"Saltlife....thank you, I thought it would be days untill a response...first post here! I actually didn't do that with the impeller. I just put it in the housing first in the same direction the old one was going. I assume the right direction is to turn the prop forward seeing that it was in forward?
I actually did what you said...guessing it made sense with the rubber grommit and guide pipe so I think it might have been something else that I did. It just seems logical that now there is no water reaching upstairs in the motor that it has to do with the water pipe.
Any more info you think might help will be appreciated and yes your info was helpful. I wanted to come in the house after the second failed attempt and start breaking things...hehe boating is so relaxing.

"Is it possible that you damaged the copper pipe when you removed that lower unit?. The only other thing I can suggest is that you have a clogged line somewhere. Insects like to make nests inside the tell tale port. Its very common expecially if the motor sat for a while. Try pushing a piece 60,80,or 100# mono up the tell tale port to see if anything is clogging the hose. I have had bug gunk as far as 8 inches inside the motor. All else fails re-install the lower unit, double checking your work for a third time. Good luck. And yes boating is a blast!!!"
 
Yeah that's the first thin

Yeah that's the first thing I thought.
When I run a hose throught the flush out water runs through it great. I think I screwed something up in the impeller assembly. I'll try it all again tomorrow.

"While you have the lower unit off, connect a garden hose to the water tube and turn on the water. Now you will know if water can circulate properly.

If the old impeller was damaged, it is possible that a piece or two got forced up the tube and is clogging your cooling system."

"GOOD idea Tony...wish I'ld read this earlier...been away.
I dropped the LU for a third time and this time I was getting water out of it...not alot but better. So I said screw it it's going in. It idled fine and I ran it for about 20 mins around plymouth harbor. I made the turn for the channel and at about 3000 rpm the alarm came on so I shut it down. After trying all the usual tricks, I gave up and pulled it out of the water and dropped it off at the boat yard. The mechanic dropped the LU and sait the pipe wasn't fitted properly at the top and he ran it in a barrel of water. It ran cool at 1800-2500 rpm but got up to 125-135'F at idle. This time the water was coming out much better at speed but at idle it was still intermittant. Still not sure I'm happy with the outcome but I'll give it a wirl if it ever stops raining.

"Well, ran it yesterday and it is still spitting intermittantly...but not overheating. But when I ran it up it was rough early then would get over 4800 rpm. Changed fuel filter and water seperator and still topped at 48-4900 rpm not 5600 as it usually does. I talked to the mechanic and he seemed to think it might have a blown head gasket or O ring. He thinks its blowing air exhaust into the water jackets which is causing the pulse. There was also alot of water coming out of the upper exhaust below the upper tell tale. It looks like something I could handle myself so I will give it a shot on tuesday or at least open it up and see. I remember the last day I had it out last year...I was wailing on it with a three man tube and it wasn't running all that good then. He happened to have a similer motor apart and the heads look somewhat accessable.
Does any of this sound like it might make sense?
I have literally gone through the entire cooling system at this point and it all looks normal. Starting to really lose patience.
