Lower Unit Reassembly Issues

I have an 87 25xd, i took the lower unit completely apart while replacing the prop shaft. When i put it back together it wont shift right. I can manually shift it into gear while the shift shaft isnt connected to the to the linkage behind the carb, but when i connect it, it wont shift into reverse. With the engine running it wont shift into forward or reverse. When i try to shift into reverse i get nothing and when i try to shift into forward it sounds like the gears are grinding. There was no shim material in the gears like the manual suggests. Any suggestions?

Check to be sure that the prop shaft is all the way into the gearcase. It should be spring loaded in the front of the propshaft and that spring is what nakes the shift clutch work correctly.

Thanks for the reply, im going to pull the thing apart again today and thatll be the first thing i check.

I broke a screw off in the bearing carrier so ill continue this when the new one gets here.
