I have a Mercruiser 250 HP with a Bravo 1 lower unit. We were on a calm lake yesterday going at full speed (about 50 MPH). I trimmed up a bit and then the RPM alarm went off. I immediately put it in neutral and came to an idle. I tried to take off again slowly. I was able to put the engine in forward gear and go about 5 mph. As I gave it gas, it felt like the engine was popping out gear (almost like going from drive to neutral in a car). I had to limp into the launch at less than 10 mph...couldn't go faster than that. I could put it in reverse and in forward. Is this a lower unit problem or something else? I'd appreciate any advice.
