"We have a triton 18' year 1999 with a johnson 150
We have taken the motor apart and replaced one piston with rod and bearings and put it back together.
We hear a noise in the motor still which sorta sounds like a Rod in the motor. However, only when we run the boat on the lake do we hear the noise. We do not hear the noise when we back the boat in on the trailer and leave it tied to the trailer. Neither in gear nor out of gear do we hear the noise when the boat is secured to the trailer. Out on the lake it sounds like a rod to me.
I wonder if the noise could be coming from the lower unit. We know there are problems there but not sure what. There are filings in the oil some are as large as a large grain of sand 1/16". The shifter was working eraticly and when I tried last to put it into reverse and it went into forward I brought it back and am trying to remove the lower unit.
I drained it and followed procedure outlined in the book (Johnson manual) and it only drops a bit over an inch. What could be holding it? the shift rod is free of the linkage.
anything anyone could inform me on would be great.
Thanks,
Nate"
