Lower unit problems or a rod in the motor

"We have a triton 18' year 1999 with a johnson 150

We have taken the motor apart and replaced one piston with rod and bearings and put it back together.

We hear a noise in the motor still which sorta sounds like a Rod in the motor. However, only when we run the boat on the lake do we hear the noise. We do not hear the noise when we back the boat in on the trailer and leave it tied to the trailer. Neither in gear nor out of gear do we hear the noise when the boat is secured to the trailer. Out on the lake it sounds like a rod to me.

I wonder if the noise could be coming from the lower unit. We know there are problems there but not sure what. There are filings in the oil some are as large as a large grain of sand 1/16". The shifter was working eraticly and when I tried last to put it into reverse and it went into forward I brought it back and am trying to remove the lower unit.

I drained it and followed procedure outlined in the book (Johnson manual) and it only drops a bit over an inch. What could be holding it? the shift rod is free of the linkage.

anything anyone could inform me on would be great.

Thanks,
Nate"

If the shift rod is free then

If the shift rod is free then most probably the drive shaft is not pulling out from the crankshaft.

We have had the motor off separately. WE did have trouble getting the motor off the drive shaft but when we took the bind off of it it came easily. Then we had trouble getting it back on but it finally went we assume because we finally got it alignet.

Did you find out if the noise

Did you find out if the noise is the LU yet? Got me curious. My 225 with a bad LU makes a knocking sound just like a rod. Does it in gear only. Go figure!

No! and it may be a while before I find out. $$$$$$ is a problem now .. we have loaded money in this boat and I'm about $$$$$ed out. The lower unit is definitely bad. I don't know if we will be able to purchase the parts or a new one. It's fall here and deer season is now the priority. Can't do both . So i may wait till spring now .
We have the lower unit off and found that when it broke or supposedly when it broke it even chunked out the case where the prop fits on the shaft.

Can you tell me exactly when you hear the noise? Ours is only audible when your the driver or if you standing on shore when the driver is coming out of the hole going away from you or going at a 90 deg angle to you. Also when the boat is half mile away you hear the normal motor sound less but the suspect sound is more audible. Strange that it is not audible at the dock.

"I have had excellent luck with used LU's. I have purchased a few in my days. I bought one locally (Craigslist), and a couple on Ebay. Never paid more than $250. Never got a dud."
