" I've noticed that my '69 9.5hp Johnson has started leaking (milky looking) lower unit fluid. I know that if my fluid is milky looking, that I'm getting water somewhere that I shouldn't be. I haven't taken her apart yet, but it appears the fluid is coming from somewhere around the prop shaft. Any suggestions on what the problem might be, or where to start looking? Thanks in advance! If it isn't leaking too bad, and you arn't keeping it permanently in water; it may not be something that is worth your time to fix. The time and money spent fixing the leak is not much less than you will spend to repair any damage that may be caused by it.

If you find a cheap gear lube with the same viscosity( I believe it's 80w90), you could just keep an eye on it and make frequent lube changes. I got by on a 70 HP Johnson for a while by doing that, and never ran into any problems from it; in addition, that engine I'm speaking of was primarily used in salt water.

" I would definitely change out the seals. Water simply doesn't lubricate very well. A seal kit for that motor from and OMCE dealer or NAPA will run you aout $20.00, plus a can of sealer. You'll need to make one homemade tool to remove the shift-shaft bushing (using an 8"-10" nail with the head ground down) and when you're done you won't have to worry about it for another 30 years...
