"David, there is generally 2 large headed screws in the lower unit (towards the front or "boat end") - the vent screw is near the cavitation plate, and the "fill screw" is down near the skeg.

The lower unit oil should be changed every year, so the fact that you are asking about checking it is a good indication that you should change it.

This oil doesn't "diminish" unless you have a leak. Generally, this is checked when you drain it.

You can get some on your fingers and check for foreign particles (which could indicate a gear problem).

If the fluid appears "milky" that generally indicates water has got in (seal problem). If you suspect water, you can collect some in a small glass jar and let it sit. If water is present it will settle to the bottom.

The gear oil is usually a (gold) colour - similar to corn syrup.

It is replaced by first draining, then with both screws removed, filling from the bottom hole (with the engine in it's normal position).
It's full when it begins to dribble out of the vent hole. At that point you first replace the vent screw, then quickly the fill screw....

If you are going to replace it, DO NOT use automotive gear oil - marine gear oil is available at marine and most auto parts retailers. Automotive gear oil will expand, foam and blow all your seals..."
