Lower unit oil

This has probably been discussed, but the search feature kicked it out because "oil" was too short of a word.

Is there any difference between automotive GL-5 differential oil and Marine Lower Unit oil?.

What weight oil is correct for a 1995 Johnson 48 SPL lower unit?

Thanks guys

Those lower units are NOT robust.-----Visit a dealer and buy the best recommended oil !!
I know about the weak lower units. Do you know what year they put a stronger one in place?

Is the synthetic oil actually any better than the regular oil?

??----None of the 2 cylinder 40 / 48 / 50 / 55 / 60 HP have a robust lower unit from about 1976 to 2005 !!----That is why a 3 cylinder gearcase was adapted for " commercial " models.

Will that adapted lower unit fit on a 1995 48 SPL? Probably cannot even find one. But, what year models had this adapted lower unit? I remember when they came out with the tiller handle 40 hp with a recoil rope start. It was termed a commercial model, but all they said about it was that it had all SS bolts and a larger alternator. If they said anything about the lower unit, I have forgotten it.

Will the models 2006 and later fit the 1995 model?

The 3 cylinder gearcase DOES NOT FIT on the 89 and newer 2 cylinder.----It DOES NOT FIT for various reasons !----Who said that commercial models had a larger alternator ?

I looked at buying one around the mid 80's. And that was all I recall being the selling points. It was not much. Only about 3 amps. That and all SS bolts, but I though all the bolts were SS anyway.
