Recently replaced the dog clutch on my 1998 force 90hp. Put it all back together and everything works except I noticed a clicking in neutral when manually spinning the prop. I realized that the clutch was making slight contact with the forward gear in neutral. I disconnected the shifter cable and manually shifted until the clicking stopped (true neutral). In this position the shift rod is much closer the R than F. I readjusted the shifter cable (spun the peg) as far as it would go to reach the rod position in this "true neutral" but it still wasnt long enough. If 0% is F and 100% is R along the shifter rod slot then this position is like 60 or 65%.
Doesnt seem right. I can manually set the gear selection and it naturally "clicks" into F, N, R. I feel like the true neutral should on this natural middle position anyways. I am having to oppose the spring in order to get the prop to be free of both gears.
One thought maybe this is dumb. I had to very carefully insert the bearing carriage in order to keep the thrust bearing where it needed to be - otherwise if would slip off the lip and move closer to the dog clutch. Maybe it did slip off unknowingly when I installed it, changing the distance between the two gears and the clutch?
Not sure, any thoughts?
Thank you in advance.
