Lower unit install

I removed the lower unit for a water pump repair, now I cannot get the drives driveshaft back in. I look up inside the tube where the shaft goes and can see a ring that keeps.moving around. You can reach the ring with a rod and move it freely, but when you raise the motor to install lower unit the ring moves back in the way.
