I have a 16' 89 sea ray 3.0 that has a lower unit that I need help to identify. It does not appear to be the original that came with the boat.
I have typed the serial into this sites look up, but still come up with nothing.
The unit says Mercruiser HP 165 on one side, and the serial number is 4438740.
Could this be an older alpha 1,. I had a 74 glastron a while back with a 120 in it, and this drive looks just like what was on the 74.
Thank you for your help. mercruiser 002.jpgmercruiser 004.jpg

those pics are of the upper, not the lower, just for terminology sake...

that is a #1 drive (sometimes referred to as pre-alpha), same model as you had on your 74 Glastron
serial number dates it approx. 1975 or 76
It says 165, so it originally had 1.65:1 ratio upper gears in the upper, but can be rebuilt with any gear ratio, so it may have the correct 3.0 gearing in it which would be 1.98:1
easy enough to remove top cover and count gear teeth

Ayuh,... Like hystat says,... That's an MC-1, Upper, which is the wrong ratio for yer 3.0l...

Thank you both for your help.
You have both helped me many times in the past as I have been an OMC fanatic for years, but now I am begining to learn about mercruiser outdrives and their positvie and negative issues... it appears that they have many of the same issues,,, just merc is a lot cheaper...
thanks again.!!!
