Im changing my lower unit gear

Im changing my lower unit gear lube to winterize it. How much gear lube should i put in it? I know to drain then put new in but how much. I didn't want to put to much in it. Johnson 175 horsepower motor. Thanks

"Eric, if you fill it (with the motor upright), through the drain hole, there is enough in it when it starts to come out of the vent.

The lower unit doesn't need much (if any) "breathing" room. So once completely full, the tiny bit you lose getting the plugs back in leaves more than enough space.

Unlike automotive gear oil (which expands and should never be used in an outboard), marine gear oil expands little to not at all...."
