Lower unit compatibility

Hi, I just bought a 1994 Yamaha 40hp ELRS and I suspect it may need the lower unit replaced. I have a line on a 1988 40hp ELG locally. Does anyone know if the two lower units are interchangable? Or can someone tell me what years I should be looking for? Thanks.

Go to boats.net and find your existing lower unit, select the part and scroll down to the bottom where you’ll find a list of other years/models that share the same part.

It seems it they were compatible from the mid 80s to the early 90s and were redesigned for 1994.
