"LU damaged beyond repair (gears appear to have disintegrated inside). Is it possible to get a replacement lower unit (cost of new engine is out, so repair/replace is only alternative!). If possible to get replacement, anyone know reputable place to purchase it as it will have to be shipped overseas. On another note, any ideas why gears would have broken up? Just curious.

Your best bet is to search for a used unit that somebody has parted out (Ebay may be a good spot to watch).

A rebuilt/reman unit for this motor (locally) goes for between 1500-2000 dollars. A new one (discontinued now) is over 3 grand.

You could find a similar vintange used outboard in this horsepower for well under 1000 dollars and maybe something to consider...

"Thanks for the reply Graham.

Am looking at sites with parts to see if I can pick up cheaper.

Any thoughts on why this happened? Was using boat, grinding noise, returning home and although engine was working, we were going nowhere! Mechanic gave quick check and when he turned prop (freely) there was a grinding sound as he turned it. It is he who said new lower unit. Is he correct?"

"The grinding noise would indicate that something is chewed up inside. Could be extensive or just a bearing.

If a bearing, it could have simply worn on it's own. If the gears are chewed, could have been caused by water seeping into the lower unit, loss of gear oil, component that simply got tired and gave up etc.

Without disassembling the gearcase it's difficult/impossible to tell the extent of the damage. In any event, a lower unit rebuild is a costly process - but perhaps you may want to have it looked at by someone that is a) willing and b) capable of repairing it. At the least they could give you a quote - it may require less to repair than to replace, even with a used unit..."

"I have a complete 1989 Force 85 for sale, too bad that you are in Ireland. I checked just for the heck of it today and shipping would run around $650 minimum. I guess you will need to consider fixing it since the shipping costs are prohibitive, at least by the method that I checked."

In addition to Graham's comments.....
Poor engagement of gears (shifting adjutment)would probably be a good suspect to look at.
Also, some bevel gears are machine cut steel and some can be pressed powder metal. Powder metal gears are much cheaper to manufacture. I do believe they tend to wear quicker than steel. I couldn't tell you what you have without seeing the part.
This is not to say PM is not a good product as it is widely used in the auto and truck industry, lawn and garden equipment, marine products etc..."
