I have a 5.7 L MerCruiser inboard on a 1988 rinker 21 foot deck boat. Engine runs like a dream have had some work done to it But when I shifted into gear it sputters sounds like it's trying to backfire. Doesn't stall out and is fine when it's in the lowest gear not going very fast. Runs great when it's in neutral I've described this to a few boat buddies of mine and they seem to think it's the lower shift cable Any thoughts
