Ok guys, I have my shift cable ordered from merc.
My cable threads into bellhousing from the front and I bEleive new cable threads in from the rear.
Do I need to remove bellhousing for this? I ordered the
pin removal tool today just incase
Also which tap do I need?

Ok, thanks for that info. I went to napa this morning and picked up the tap the part number for reference is T-302. 1/4 x 18 I will give it a try this afternoon after work.

Re: Lower shift cable install 77 mod 120 hp

Well I checked the tap that napa sent and it's tapered instead
of straight. I may have to buy one online.

It is ok to use that one.

Measure the widest part of the threaded end of the cable,

Find the same diameter on the tap make a mark.

Now make a mark about 4 threads closer the the smaller end of the tap and when tapping the hole only go that deep.

The key is not to tap the hole so much that the threaded end of the cable does not tighten up before it bottoms out at the hex.

You typically want a cable tightened until there is approximatly 1/8 inch between the hex and the housing.

All I have ever used is a pipe tap when doing this and following my explanation carefully.

Remeber it is better to tap it too little than to much because you can allways remove the cable and tap it some more.

Re: Lower shift cable install 77 mod 120 hp

SO i should start from the aft end where there is no threads, or chase the threads on the for end. I hate to be clueless, but dont want to mess this up. thanks kghost

If you are not good at tapping threads I am not sure I can give you guidance.

That is why a staright tap would be good for you so you can tap all the way from the forward side of the housing.

If you are careful and I mean careful then go at it from the aft side.
my other post was aimed at doing it from the aft side.

I would run it in from the forward side as far as you can while watching the aft side, Once you have broken thru and a couple of threads of the tap are showing then pull the tap and engage it from the aft side and follow my previous post

If you are not comfortable try to get a straght standard tap

Re: Lower shift cable install 77 mod 120 hp

Ok, all done easy as pie. I did use the tapered tap.
Starting from the front, slowly turning until I could see the end of the tap come through the back. Then a few turns from the rear to finish the threads. Thanks for all of the detailed information, it really makes things easy
