I just put a new waterpump in and am struggling to get the lower unit back on to the engine. The problem is the shift linkage rod and getting it through the hole in the engine (under the carbs). Any pointers?

"try a lil lube, makes it easier to get past the seals, and slightly wiggle it. once the lower unit is all the way up, you may need to use some needle nose pliers to pull the shift rod up and get it back to the original position.
A 2nd set of hands to help makes a difference."

"I went to a hardware store and bought three really long bolts, same size and thread as the LU mounting bolts. Once I get the LU into position, I put the bolts in place. This allows you to finish installation and get the shift rod in easier. That said, it is still a total PIA. Some recommend removing the lower cowling for better access. Not an option on mine because it has power steering."

"Thanks for the tips. The longer bolts seem to work pretty well. I did have to add some extra washers because I was running out of thread. I am having trouble getting the unit snug though with the upper portion. I have about 1/2 an inch to go all the way around it am getting, it feels like, too much resistance. Do you think the drive shaft may not be lining up correctly? The water intake tube seems to be in position as well as the exhaust."
