"I am new to o/b motors. I have a 1985 Johnson 90hp motor that has been sitting for about 10 years. I have finally gotten the motor to run, It had a bad trigger coil. But I have read that I should replace the water pump, so I have a new one on order. My question is when I go to refill the lower unit with oil can I use a automotive type gear oil that is rated GL-5 or do I need to use a marine type gear oil. Is there a difference between marine and automotive oils? This site has help me alot so far. this is a great site, with great people.........."

"Use only what is recommended in that lower unit which is..... HiVis 80/90w gearcase lubricant. This is available at Wal*Mart, K-Mart, other stores, and also at your local dealership at a somewhat higher price.

That gearcase is quite expensive. It's not a good idea to use anything other than what is recommended."
