Lower crank seal lip facing in or out (toward case)

1979 Johnson 55hp
Installing new pistons ,rings and gaskets/seals
What direction does the lower crank seal get installed?


The "lip side with spring" is currently facing down (away from case) when installed on this case
Is that right?
I know it's different but the 2 stroke dirtbikes I have worked on the crank seal faces in (toward case)

Install as it was. If lip 'IN', water will be sucked into the engine!

Going back with std bore. Cylinder look great. Bought a powerhead off Ebay. Just wanted to freshen it up. Didn't want to take a chance on a piston cracking with the age and no history.
