low/high profile water shaft

I am looking for some info in what I have so I can order the right part. I have been looking for some thing to be able to identify which shaft. The broken shaft is about 5.5 inches. The model number on the engine is 990231M and the model number on the upper gear case is 981091. The boat is a 1978 but I am starting to think the engine and leg are 1976. any one out there in the real world able to shine a light my way. Does not need to be a bright light even a candle will help.
 
If you have the shaft out take a look on this site the part number you need is 18-2185 if the short shaft. or 18-2184 is the long shaft. take a look at yours and pick the one you need.
 
Thanks but the part number is not readable. But I have just found out that the low is 5 1/2 and the high is 8 1/2. now that I have this in formation I am able to order the right part.
