"Hey guys, can anyone give me a reason for running a low compression kit? I have a 1990 evinrude 200 v-6 looper and was concerned about my comppression. After looking into a rebuild, I found that I have a low compression kit on my motor."

"When I rebuilt my 235, the mechanic made me switch to low compression heads. He explained that the earlier engines needed higher octane than 87, and that they tended to run too hot (detonation) with todays fuels. He claimed that in his opinion this accounted for some of the piston failures he saw."

That makes sense. Any idea what your compression was after your rebuild? Mine is 80 psi. Thanks for the help.

"I have a 1994 J150 commercial, it is a low compression engine, most engines run 120+psi but mine runs around 75-80. Its designed that way.
You can run a bigger screw and get more low end torque. Engines work easier."

"I don't remember for sure

"I don't remember for sure, but I believe it was in the 80's as well. It was over 90 before the change of the heads."
