Looks like she is near the end

Looks like she is near the end 60 to 65 on compression. Its hard starting but will run all day. However I just could not get it started.
seemed to start well in the cold. Any ideas to get the last season. When I try to start her it just pops and starter gear falls out battery and starter are good. Tried giving gas but seems then to flood. Any way to improve compression w/o rebuilding

"Walter,

That compression is way too low. The only hope of a simple cause for it would be badly burned head gaskets, or warped heads.

"Try a new compression gauge.

"Try a new compression gauge. Try Ring free, or a heavy dose of SeaFoam, according to their instructions. Let us know how things turn out."

That outboard is done. look down the spark plug hole and on the spark plug. I am sure you will see metal shavings. call her quits. just my 2cents though

I finally got it started. I sprayed in a little starter fluid in carbs. Once it warmed up a little all I had to do is turn the key and it started right up. While running around it seemed like 1 cylinder was firing intermitently could that be part of the problem? Carbs were rebuilt before the season. Came back the next day same result until the starter fluid?. I just injected omc tuner and will let it sit overnight. I will then try the SeaFoam as Sleeper suggested.

"I would seriously check out that compression tester. 60-65 is extremely low. You might see that on one or two cylinders, but I would not expect to see that on all of them."

"Starting fluid has no lubricating qualities. If you're going to spray anything into the carburetor throats, use a premix (gas/oil) in a spray container.

Your carburetors are fouled. Remove, clean, and rebuild them. Be sure to manually clean the four high speed jets that are located in the center bottom portion of the float chambers using a piece of single strand steel wire."

"I normally used a spray can with 'fogging oil' as 'start assist'. It has the advantage of sealing off leaking valve plates, crank shaft seal rings, piston rings etc and adds lubrication. On the safety side, it is not as flamable as gas."

I have the engine starting now

I have the engine starting now several times. I notice the fuel hose from my water separator to the engine seemed worn and soft so I replaced it. engine has been running ok. Except when I open it up to go on plane it take awhile for all cylinders to kick in ( I think) it seems if one lags behind and then kicks in. I throtle up to 40k RPMs then after a few seconds speeds up w/ another 4k to 5k rpms. Is this a spark problem.

"I think You in general have or have had a fuel problem that may have damaged pistons and cylinders. Perhaps You may manage to loosen some rings by running 'engine tuner', 'Ring free" and Cabon guard. How does the spark plugs look? Does the engine run stable at idle? Would be nice if You could post a pick of the plugs or send it by mail to me."
