loud twin 454s on tiara

Loud twin 454s make music impossible to hear. I lost some thin dry insulation and need replace. Would I want to try to better sound proof or just get head phones.
 
If the insulation was soundproofing and it was acceptable before, I'd try to repair the missing pieces.

If it was unacceptable before, a good set of headphones (wireless ones are available now) would probably be cheaper in the long run.
 
Fiberglass mufflers are reasonably priced & help a lot if you have access to install them. Insulating the engine compartment is a big help & easy to do. A noisy boat wears you down. I had a 1981 Sportcraft with a 350 no mufflers no insulation that beat you up. It was like a different boat after I "fixed" it. Funny how far voices carry when your anchored & its nice & quiet. Its bad enough to have to listen to people yelling over loud engines a mile away. But what if they start singing with those headphones on.
 
Wow; similar story. I had a 27' 1968 sportcraft with a 440, no mufflers, rear above water exhaust. Those were the days, young and crazy. Went to San Salvador with that boat, one engine, one outdrive. Didn't make it the first year due to U joint failure 300 miles out, had to finish the job the following year! 1" foam works wonders, protect the penetrations!
 
I have been reading (for a while) about sound proofing the engine compartment. There are a couple of good and proven products. Just this week I read one person purchased the snap together rubber mats and used them for sound proofing. These are the same ones in Harbor Freight $12 for 4 which are about 3"x3', maybe 4x4. This may be an option, not sure but thought I would mention it. Obviously the melting (fire) aspect should be considered. I guess the key here is not to have a fire:))
 
Are there any marine "codes" to follow on this? The car stereo place sells something for insulating cars, but I was thinking I needed the firewall type insulation.
 
I replaced all the insulation on bottom of engine hatches with 1" Sounddown with a vinyl? sandwiched between the foam. It definetly worked well. Can now talk loudly and hear each other while seated on oppposite sides. Also adding gasketing to the hatch edges helps.
 
'Fess up, now: Are you one of those guys who run their engines at 4 grand and above?

I hear boats going down the river all the time at such rpms, and I cringe at the damage they're doing to their poor engines.

I have to yell and cannot enjoy my music at 2900-3100 on my 1991 Tiara twin 454 BW VD 1:1.8.
I lost a thin layer. Was always loud. I think my ears are going bad, as every one says shes quite when at idle at the dock.
