Loud High Ttemp Alarm

I just blew a head gasket (96 5.7 engine)due to over flow line from heat exchanger to reservoir
coming loose, resulting in coolant loss, subsequently causing gasket failure.
Is there a simple way to place some type of temp sensor, that will sound a horn/speaker
in the engine compartment. An alarm that sounds would have saved me a lot of Cash $$$

Tks...... Ivey

If you look at most marine stores or on line marine store you can buy a kit that will give you high temp and or low oil pressure. This kit is sold at Hamilton marine.

An alarm system needs to have sensors that work! I went through a half dozen NEW temp switches before finding one that worked (using a bucket of hot water and a meter).

The bottom line is, unless the sensors/ switches have been tested, they are NOT reliable.

Thanks for the replies, I will order and test in water before installing.
Jeff..... could you provide info on the sensor that DID work for you?

Also, is anyone familiar with Crusader engines, to tell me if there is a plug anywhere in
the coolant side to install a 2nd sensor, or should I just remove the sending unit that sends
temp, and install there?
Thanks Much!

I ordered a "kit" from Sierra that had the sensor and something else (?) that I didn't need. They were the only ones that worked.

A couple things about adding an engine alarm. It's probably best to mount the buzzer or bell under the instrument panel where you will definitely hear it while the boat is running. They are usually powered by the ignition key-on circuit; otherwise, you would have to add a switch to shut it off when the engine is not running (due to zero oil pressure). If you dislike the idea of the buzzer sounding as soon as you turn the key on, you can add a momentary-off button switch to press while you crank the engine.

An engine alarm is a good investment in your boat, you won't be sorry.

Crusader engines have had the audio warning system installed as standard equipment for decades and I can't say I ever saw one that wasn't hooked up by the hull builder...They cover low oil pressure, high coolant temp, and hot gear oil...
