We have a 2003 50hp yamaha and the tach stopped operating. Does anybody know how I can determine if we have a bad tachometer or something wrong on the engine?

"Gordon, the only way most guys can test a tach is install another one.

Check the wires to make sure you haven't broken one off (or rotted off ect).

The tach is usually fed by the same (circuit) that charges the battery. You can test the battery with a volt meter. Not running should have about 12.5 volts - should jump to over 13 with motor running. If that is ok, an all the wires (including the harness) are ok, then you probably have a bad tach..."

We checked the output of the v

We checked the output of the voltage regulator and were getting 13.5 volts when running. We will try a new tach. Thanks

Make sure all the wires are go

Make sure all the wires are good first - you don't want to chuck the cost of a tach (unless you can borrow one) only to find out that you have a bad ground under the dash...
