I have a 1979 silverline Nantuckett. Mercruiser 228. I was motoring on Sebago Lake this weekend and lost forward gear reverstill works fine however no forward gear. I can hear a clicking noise on the top of the motor when shifting in to forward. Have not had any trouble other than it shifted hard into reverse from forward last week. Any help would be appriciated.

Thank

Shawn

lower shift cable may have been damaged from the very hard shift.

Thank you, I will check that. I did replace shift cables last year do to the same issue as your picture. Thank you for your reply.

Re: Lost Forward Gear

You may need to readjust the shift cable, and check the operation of the interrupt switch while your at it.
Hard shifting is caused most times by the failure of the interrupt switch. The interrupt switch kills the ignition for a split second to relieve the pressure on the gear set while changing gears.
The clicking could be caused by the clutch dog not engaging fully with the forward gear. If you're lucky, an adjustment will clear up the problem. On the down side...the clutch dog and forward gear could be rounded off, which will require a new gear set.

Good luck.
