I have a 4.3 GXi which starts and runs like a top under 3000RPM. If I run at 3500-4000 RPM for more than 3-4 minutes the audible alarm comes on and the engine shuts down to idle. At that time the temperacture is gauge and oil pressure gauges are posting normal readings. Has anyone experienced this problem?

"It sounds like your engine is entering 'Engine Protection Mode'. If the ECM detects low oil pressure or high water temperature it signals an alarm and limits RPMs to 2500. Shutting off the engine and restarting will reset.

Run the engine until the alarm comes on and it backs down to idle. Quickly shut off then restart the engine. Immediately take the engine back up to 3500-4000 and see if the problem persists.

If you have verified that the gaugues are reading accurately (laser gauge for water temp. & mechanical gauge for oil) then you may have a wiring / ECM issue.

Your only option, aside from taking to a boatyard, would be to use a multimeter and record the output of your ECS (engine coolant sensor) and oil pressure sending units. I would then trace these wires back to your ECM and ensure a clean connection. A good repair manual will tell you what the resitance reading (ohms) should be for the sensors. Good luck."
