"Tiara 29 ith Crusader 6.0 engines. Starboard side low on coolant after a trip (reservoir is empty after cooling). No obvious leaks, no steaming noticeable at dock, does not overheat. How do I procede?"

"Paul,

Have you had to refill the reservior? Due to expansion when hot, the bottle will contain more coolant when hot than when the engine is cool. If you have not been adding coolant, you merely need to top off the bottle to the bottom line. That is the "Full" level for a cool engine.

If you have been adding coolant and the bottle continues to empty, you have a leak in your cooling system. It can be either internal or external. If you don't see any coolant in the bilge, it would have to be internal. The most likely suspect is the elbow gasket. That manifold has a very thin mating surface and I have seen instances of leaking coolant. The easiest way to confirm and locate the leak is to have the system pressure tested. A common radiator pressure tester will work fine. The system will require the adapter for a Volvo automotive cooling system.

Please keep in mind that that bottle does pressurize. It is not like the old overflow bottle. Do not open it when the engine is hot!

I hope this information is helpful.

Rick"

I had a similar problem with m

I had a similar problem with my crusaders. I could not find a leak anywhere. I put new caps on the heat exchangers and problem solved. Might be as simple as that. Jeff
