Losing electrical power

Hi guys
When attempting to start my 1979 50hp merc I lose electrical power and the motor will not turn over.
It will initially turn over but then nothing. Not even the tilt will work. When I disconnect the battery cables for a bit I can get the choke to click and the tilt to work but it still won' turn over.
Any possible solutions?

Double check connections on both ends of battery connections make sure battery is charged and can handle a load test, bent battery cables few inches at a time feel for hard spot( internal corrosion)or run new wire to see if make a difference what is battery voltage at battery and on engine same ???
