"I have a 4.1 L6. The motor runs fine when just idling, but when I take off it sputters and hesitates after 10 or 15 seconds. Sometimes it dies, sometimes it stays running. I have a new water seperator and fuel filter I'm going to put on. I had a friend get it up on plane while I watched the clear glass fuel filter, and when he started to accelerate I saw bubbles coming from the fuel tank into the fuel filter. Is that normal, or is it something wrong with the fuel pick-up in the tank? Could it be the carb? Is it even a fuel problem?

RE: bubbles... could be that one of the fittings in the fuel line is leaking air or the fuel line has pinhole corrosion... or a leaking gasket in the (illegal) fuel filter.

"I had the same problem, I changed filters and all that. try checking to see if you have water or some other sh*t in the tank (thats what happened to me)... Mine would idle fine at the doc, rev fine but when under a load it would die out or run like total sh*t then stall, sometimes stayed running.. I drained/cleaned the tank, put fresh gas in it and has been kickin a$$ ever since... hope that helps.."

"I've just installed a fuel pressure gauge in the fuel line. it's between the water seperator and the fuel pump. It's not reading any fuel pressure.

I also put in a new water seperator, fuel filter, and i put Seafoam in the tank.

The filter is the first thing after the fuel tank. then the water seperator, then the fuel pressure gauge, finally the fuel pump and carb.

Everything works good at idle. Of course it did before too. I wont be able to put it back in the lake until Labor day. Any other suggestions before I go try it out."
 
I think the pressure gauge nee

I think the pressure gauge needs to be between the pump and the carb to read fuel pump pressure.

Disconnect the fuel line from

Disconnect the fuel line from the carb and install the pressure gauge on the end of the line then crank the engine and observe the pressure.

"Graham, look at it this way. The pump sucks gas out of the tank so it is actually creating negative pressure and then pumps it to the carb creating positive pressure.The only place to get a "positive" reading would be after the fuel goes thru the pump."

Gotcha. Thanks for all the helpful info guys. I'll be back after Labor Day if things aren't workin yet.
