Looking to buy 65 Johnson 9.5

Found a 65 Johnson 9.5 for sale only runs on 1 cylinder according to the owner. Only want 150 for it. Is it worth buying or not. Thanks
 
They can be a great motor, or they can be a nightmare, depending o your point of view. Condition is everything. So is your ability/willingness to work on it if certain things need to be done.

BTW, that particular year is not the best in slow-idle department. So if you want to slow-troll with it, get something else.

i don't mind putting the work in, or putting a little money into it... Thanks for the advise!
 
I have two of them and they are a pain in the butt to work on.My advice would be to look for something a little more user friendly.

I have owned a Merc Mark 10 and that is a pain to work on as well.... Any other recommendations? I don't mind a little work at all, but also don't want to spend a ton of money either.... Thanks
 
In my opinion, they are an easy motor to work on. UNLESS you have to do a job that requires shucking the motor out of the outer shell. That can be somewhat intimidating to the novice. Not a hard job for me because I've done it lots of times, but it does take some time, which is money if you have to pay somebody to do it.

Normal service like carburetor and ignition and yes even the recoil starter are a piece of cake.

Like Kim said, and despite what I said,if the compression is OK and even on both cylinders and the lower end oil is clean pretty much everything else is an easy fix and that would not be a bad price.
