"Well, as I said I'm a new

"Well, as I said I'm a newbie here referred here by a pontoon forum I visit and had some questions and they said someone here might be able to help me out.So here it goes..I have an 87' Johnson 110 VRO that has not been started in about 5 years. I have cleaned and rebult the carbs, worked on the impeller to get water coming out of the pee hole, and other misc items have bee addressed.
When I put it in a test tank and got it running, it seemed to have a rough idle and would cough or backfire every so many revs. When I put it in gear and punched it, it came to life and didn't miss a lick. I thought I saw some water coming out of the motor somewhere, but couldn't pinpoint where. When I shut it off, I pulled the plugs out and checked them to see if they were firing ok. Three of them looked like they should, but the #4 plug looked wet, and when I put a lighter to the plug, it didn't burn(water?).
I thought it had the signs of a leaking head gasket so I pulled the heads off to change them and found it was leaking around the #4 cylinder. Upon further investigation, I found a crack in the casting between the water jacket and the outside of the casting(my water leak I saw). I don't see were it would hurt to leave the leak alone, other than leaking a little water into the housing. I was thinking about using something such as JB Weld to help mend the crack and slow down the leak and was wondering if anyone has ran into this before or heard of anyone trying this.
I have a pic that I will try to post to show the crack so you can see where the crack lies, like I said it is not in the cylinder wall so I don't see where it would hurt, but thats why I'm here to see if I'm missing anything.
Any help or advice will be greatly appreciated!! Thanks

"That crack can be successfull

"That crack can be successfully corrected with "Gray Marine Tex" as it is a outer crack, not into the cylinder wall itself. JB Weld might work but I prefer the Marine Tex. There is also a "White Marine Tex" but from experience I've found the "Gray" to be stronger for some reason.

However, that outer crack doesn't explain how water is gaining access to the interior area of the #4 cylinder, and I'd strongly suggest that the engine not be run until the cause of that problem is found and corrected."

"Thanks for the reply and info

"Thanks for the reply and information... the head gasket had signs of leaking between the water jacket and the cylinder, thus I'm pretty sure(and hopefull)thats where my internal water came from. Don't know if the crack had anything to do with the leaking gasket or vice versa, but kinda wonder if they had anything to do with each other.."
