looking for 91-59970 Mercury thread repair kit refill

Hi All ! Any suggestions on how to find these? I've searched the web a bunch and found one so far, but would like a few more. This is a set of 10 inserts for Mercury's keensert repair for spark plug holes. Keensert (2)sm.jpg

Thanks! :) I've checked that and many others. First, we want aluminum inserts since the engines we work on (mercury outboards, konig outboards, motorcycle engines) all have aluminum heads, and we prefer aluminum for a number of reasons. Yeah, heat transfer through material that thin really isn't significantly different between aluminum and steel, but replacing an aluminum insert in an aluminum head is sooooo easy compared to steel.

We have the tooling for the Mercury Keenserts, though admittedly getting new tooling for new insert systems isn't really an obstacle.

Annnnnd we generally believe that Mercury test drove whatever was available before they chose this mechanical and material config.

We've used a number of inserts over decades and prefer the fastening/sealing system in Keenserts.

We'll keep looking. We still have a small stock of Keenserts and if we keep our eyes open and the community looking, we come up with additional inserts from time to time.

Keenserts are still manufactured in a variety of sizes, but we can't find them in aluminum for 14mm plug threads. They show up in high-end applications such as aircraft stuff......but we can't get the aluminum ones..... :(

That was my next suggestion, aviation. Another option might be a premium machinist. What I have done, as an experienced mig aluminum welder, for acceptable applications, is fill, drill, and tap. Mig can offer more possibilities in a variety of applications.

We are premium machinists. :cool: Carl can weld gum wrappers together and has worked in biotech R&D with bizarre equipment such as, um, well, 0.010" end mills. Yeesh, over my head. Butttt a lotta this stuff is 1950s die or sand cast aluminum that is often impregnated with unburned hydrocarbons, so welding is never porosity-free. Hence the inserts.

Of course, when we run out of Keenserts we'll try others as suggested, and I bet they'll be fine. We're just being stubborn.

Unkie, I run a little more gas pressure (30) psi and of course pure argon. Clean as good as you can first of course. Carefully regulate heat and wire speed, experience is so very important. If possible preheat the part what common sense will allow. Sometimes you can pull off almost the impossible.

Yup all good stuff. We pretty much always TIG aluminum....lemme kick this around with Dr. C. tnx! unkie
