Look at my hole !!!!!

No really..... look at my hole, this is between the side of the intake and valve cover. This hole is on both motors ??? Has anyone ever seen this before, it looks like you can see right down into the underside of the intake manifold.

That's the exhaust cross overpassage that heats the carb to reduce cold running problems. If it's rotted through you'll have exhaust leak problems. (Did it leak?) If you can't find (or afford!) two new intakes, you could do what the drag racers do: They block off that entire passage with molten lead. Alternately, a good welder could either block it with a metal plate, or even repair the rotted areas (much harder to do).

PS: My 360s are 1985 vintage so I may be in the same pickle in a few more years.

Hey Jeff, The edges are fine it looks like a factory cut, just looks weird to see a hole there, they are 1989 motors, no exhaust leak at all. If dirt gets in there would it make it down to the lifters??

Look at my hole!!!
You should actually speak with your family physician about this.... but since we're here! :D

If dirt gets in there would it make it down to the lifters??
Jeff is much more knowledgeable on this than I am, but if I understand the Chrysler 318/360 cylinder head and the mating intake manifold......, the opening would lead into the oil area. Yes/No?

Jeff, what is the purpose of the U shaped opening above the exhaust cross-over port?

It's part of the casting and has to do with heat dispensation around the exhaust cross over.

Well answered, "Jeff".

Yes, a hole here MIGHT go all the way down, but it should lead to the exhaust passage and a leak. Strange that it doesn't leak--yet.

Great, thanks guys ! I was picturing having to do intakes and didn't want that !! Now it's off to the mall to shop and kill people that get in my way !! HAPPY HOLIDAYS

I am new to this forum, I have a 1983 34 silverton w/ 2 360 chryslers. Just going over them, replacing corroded parts etc. They run geat, but I noticed the I have the same holes as in this post in one engine only. Still confused as to what I should do, install a new gasket ? There is oil in one of the holes, suspect it might be from leaking valve cover but do not want to put all new parts on engine & have an oil leak there or some other problem. Would appreceiate any info or help regarding this. thanks ps....... think this forum stuff is great thanks again

In a weak moment, I allowed the marina to work on one of my 360s. The "mechanics" omitted the metal plates that MUST be included in the intake gaskets, which promptly leaked (of course). After they re-did their work, the gasket never leaked again.

The photo shows what the gaskets SHOULD look like at installation. It's possible the plates on yours were left out--like mine--or rotted out over time.

"suspect it might be from leaking valve cover"

Fix the inexpensive valve cover gasket if its leaking. Dry up the oil and see if the hole fills up again.

yeah, going to try that 1st. seemed odd the other engine had a gasket over the holes. only one side of this engine was wet, the other was dry. will see how it works out thanks for the replies
