Long to short shaft swap

I recently acquired a '73 18 hp E18304A which is fitted with a long shaft (apparently converted by looks of the spacers paint color) and I'm considering swapping the short shaft from my 65 FD-19 onto this motor. Are the two interchangeable? I don't need a long shaft for my boat but I consider the '73 an upgrade from my '65 and considering the swap possibility.
