"Okay, I cant convert my '83 to a long shaft, but I found a 1978 (#2R78R). Does anyone know if that can be made into a long shaft and/or how to go about it? Thanks.

"Paul, once again you have found one that was not produced in a long shaft version.

To change from short to long would reqire replacing (or modifying) the exhaust housing (leg) and the driveshaft, shift-shaft (if applicable) and water-tube (at least that's what immediately comes to mind).

Usually the easiest way to do it is obtain a "parts motor (blown motor)" in a long shaft version and swap out everything below the powerhead.

However, I think you will have a difficult time finding a long-shaft outboard below about 6 horses. A boat big enough to require a long shaft generally would be too heavy for something smaller to even move at trolling speed.

I have a 2.5 Ev "kicker" on my 14 foot aluminum (total weight including passengers 850lbs) and it can barely make trolling speed 3-4 mph on very calm water with no wind...

If you already have a short-shaft motor, you may just want to consider a "kicker mount" which you could lower to the required height and use the short shaft on the 20" transom...."
