Prevents starting in gear.---------------If you are the only one running the motor and make sure it is in neutral before pulling the cord , you don't need it.

i dont know how hard it is to replace but i would do it...here is the scenario that occurs...the motor starts to die...reflex on a tiller throttle and you open it up as it dies....then you get the motor started but guess what..its in gear and wide open...i have personally witnessed two incidents when this happened..one guy ended up under a turned over boat but got out ...the other guy wrapped his arms around the motor as he was going over it and the prop ate him alive..both of these guys were sober and older and probably had 80 years of boating experience between them...just my opinion..do what you want...

I know of two guys that got pitched out of a boat. Both are no longer with us. When you get pitched out and nobody to steer, the boat will beach itself, or run into another boat, or go around in circles. When it goes around in a circle, it comes back to run over you and finish you off. One of the guys I know of had only a 5hp motor, so don't think it has to be a big go-faster rig.

makes sense. I remember one time last year I had it in gear, and it started. thankfully it was throttled way down.
I will surly replace it. thanks very much guys. GREAT SITE
Have a great day
