" I have a 1987 Yamaha 220, with a corroded shift rod, cranky power tilt (doesn't like to go down), and carburetor that needs cleaning. My mechanic says its a $1000-2000 job for shift rod alone, and it's risky, might find other problems.

Any suggestions? do I sell the motor for scrap/parts and look for a 3-4year old model? I can't afford the ~$15,000 for a new HPDI Yamaha. "

"Ben,

The shift rod is a frequent cause of trouble on these engines. My opinion is that it is the result of poor design, and as far as I know it has not been corrected as yet.

The mechanic is correct when he says that other problems can arise in the process of repairing the shift rod. You have to pull the powerhead, and that can be a big problem. The long studs that secure the powerhead to the mid-section can be so badly seized that you have to do some demolition work to get the thing apart. If you are lucky, you can get by with breaking just the spacer between the powerhead and mid-section; maybe $150 or so for the part. If you are not lucky the price tag can go up dramatically.

Having said all that, I would point out that if the thing comes apart without incident, it could be repaired for a lot less than $1000. I think $500-$650 is about right for the shift rod job if there are no complications.

Tony"
