LM360 Distributor Rotation

I am trying to bring a pair of 1976 LM360's back to life. They were rebuilt a few years back and have never been run(The distributors were removed). I would like to pressurize the engines before turning them over. I was able to make a tool from an old distributor that can be used to rotate the oil pump. I believe that both LH and RH engines were geared to have the distributors rotate in the same direction. Can anyone tell me whether I need to turn the oil pump CW or CCW?

Correct! The plug wires go into the cap of the reverse rotation motor in the opposite order.

"Jeff is correct. Chrysler had the distributors rotating the same direction.. The tool to pressurize the engine doesnt go into the top of the dist drive gear though ( You would have to be turning the cam ) you pull out the dist. drive gear and the tool goes all the way down into the oil pump. That way the only thing turning is the pump, If you need the correct tool you can purchase at any Chrysler - Dodge dealer ( will most likely order ir ) or online part number is 4286800 or you can get it thru Summit racing at http://store.summitracing.com/partdetail.asp?part=DCC-4286800 It's about a 7 dollar tool...reasonable price to do the job correctly.

Thanks for the info Jeff and D

Thanks for the info Jeff and Dave. I imagine I would have broken a wrist trying to turn the cam with a drill. I will order the part today. The reason I ask about direction of rotation is that I don't want to take any chances moving the crank until I've fully pressurized with oil and have lubed cylinders with marvel. If my memory is correct I think the distributors turn clockwise. Ed

"Pay real close attention to the dist. drive gear as you pull it out ( it will twist as you lift it and you want to put it back in exactly where it was ).

I'm pretty sure it is CW , but I will check later tonight for you. ( walking out the door to spend the day on the lake )

"Dave is correct! Be sure the mark is on Top Dead Center on the damper or flywheel BEFORe you pull the oil pump gear out. Then, when putting it back in, again be sure the mark is on Top Dead Center. Unlike other engines, you can't be 'off a tooth' unless that drive gear is.
